A bid to turn a care home into a shared house with 15 bedrooms has met fierce opposition.

Plans have been revealed to convert the former 14-bedroom care home at Chesterholm Lodge, in Britten Road, Lee-on-the-Solent.

Director of BSR London Ltd - Rajoo Ramana - wants to revamp the building which has been shut since 2019.

There have been eight objections so far, with residents nearby worrying about a lack of parking, an increase in antisocial behaviour and noise, amenities being stretched and the negative impact on the character of the area.

Paul Hammond, of Nottingham Place, said: “The immediate neighbours will [not] be thrilled at the prospect of 15 single men, probably, with nothing to do and all day to do it.

“It would set an unwanted precedent for West Lee; how long would it be before the owners of the empty care homes on Kings Road and Glen Heathers on Newton Place submit similar plans? The character of the area would be gone forever.”

Neighbour Susan Dawes said: “The immediate local community has many vulnerable residents who will be adversely affected by ASB and crime usually attributed to such premises.”

Derek Cleeton, of Milvil Road, said: “Providing 15 bedrooms in one property has the potential for an additional 15 vehicles either parking on site or in the surrounding roads. The roads in Lee are already busy and parking is often at a premium, especially around Britton Road.”

KP Goodall, of Milvil Road, suggested the house would be more useful as two or three retirement flats.

Each of the 15 bedrooms would be for a single person, and have an ensuite with shower room and a desk area.

Plans show there will be a shared bathroom with shared kitchen/living and dining areas on the ground floor.

Mr Ramana wants seven bedrooms on the ground floor and eight on the first floor with an additional 12 square metre kitchen/dining area.

If planning permission is granted by Gosport Borough Council, the property will have internal layout changes and external alterations but no major building works.

There are currently five car parking spaces and a cycle storage for 16 bicycles is proposed at the rear of the site.

The detached house sits in a corner plot and is within an eight-minute walk of bus stops.

A decision is due by September 4.
