A sudden downpour briefly cooled a heatwave just before the Fair Oak Carnival kicked off, but Britain’s smallest fire brigade was still on hand to battle any flare-ups.

The 8th Eastleigh Cub Scouts traded their uniforms for firefighting gear, becoming the stars of the July 8, 1989, parade. It was the grand finale of a week of festivities hosted by the Fair Oak Community Association.

A larger-than-life cow named Daisy stole the show, leading a troupe of milkmaids through the village streets.

The Wyvern Play School brought their own brand of excitement with a Super Bowl ‘89-themed float, while St Thomas Play Group opted for a more traditional English charm with their Sing a Song of Sixpence display.

Carnival Queen Janice Bartlett and Princess Sarah Holloway led the vibrant parade, accompanied by the energetic beats of four live bands.

The party continued into the night with a bustling carnival disco.
