Lives have been put at risk after a lifeboat was vandalised in what has been labelled a "senseless act".

Volunteers at Hamble Lifeboat said they were left "deeply saddened and concerned" after the damage, which they say was caused by children on Monday afternoon.

It is estimated to have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.

The independent lifeboat is now appealing for parents to educate children on the dangers of water and the importance of lifeboats.

Speaking to the BBC, station manager Paul Ackland said: “If we'd had a call-out, we would have been delayed five or ten minutes – that could have been someone's life.”

The station manager confirmed that the charity would have to raise money to repair the boat lift, railings, and boardwalk.

He added: “We’re independent, we can’t just phone someone up and get a new boat lift, a new one alone costs about £3,000.”

Hamble Lifeboat was formed in 1968 and has been ready at a moment’s notice ever since to help save casualties in Southampton Water, as well as the Rivers Hamble, Itchen, and Test.

Informing followers on Facebook of the news, a spokesperson for Hamble Lifeboat said: “When [the lifeboat] is vandalised, there's a chance it cannot perform its life-saving duties.

"Parents, we urgently need your help to ensure children understand the potential consequences of such actions.

“Please educate your children about the dangers of playing around the river and water, emphasising that the water is unpredictable and can be deadly.

“Stress the importance of safety and respect for these environments.

“Please make sure children understand that tampering with the lifeboat is not just mischief; it's a direct threat to the safety of their friends, family, and neighbours.”

They added: “Let’s prevent a tragedy before it happens. Your vigilance and cooperation are essential in maintaining the safety and well-being of others.”
