Southampton City Council and Hampshire Constabulary have issued updates after two traveller encampments were set up in Southampton.

On Saturday, August 3, a group of travellers arrived at Mansel Park in Southampton with around six caravans and four other vehicles.

Three small horses were seen roaming the area of the park, while another was ridden by one of the group.

This comes after another traveller group set up camp at BTC Club at Stoneham Lane on Friday, August 2.

The council has now issued an update on how it plans to deal with the two traveller groups currently pitched up in the city.

A spokesperson for the council said: “Southampton City Council have been made aware of an incursion onto Mansel Park, Redbridge, and the setting up of an unauthorised encampment at this location.

“The city council will be working with partners to complete statutory welfare checks prior to a decision being made as to how to proceed.

“Any reports of criminality or anti-social behaviour should be reported to the police on 101 or their web-based reporting facility Southampton City Council will work with partners, including the Police and the occupants of the encampment, to resolve this situation and reduce any impact on the community.”

A spokesperson for Hampshire police added: “We were called just after 1.40pm on Saturday, August 3, to a report of an unauthorised encampment at Mansel Park.

“We have been liaising with the group and landowner.”

With regards to the encampment at Stoneham Lane, a spokesperson added: “Southampton City Council have been made aware of an incursion onto the BTC Club at Stoneham Lane, Southampton and the setting up of an unauthorised encampment at this location.

“Any reports of criminality or anti-social behaviour should be reported to the police.”

Police said that the travellers at the Stoneham Lane site were reported at 8.10pm on Friday, August 2.
