A blaze has broken out at a the abandoned Freemantle Social Club in Southampton.

On Monday night, firefighters were called to a blaze at an abandoned building on Waterloo Road, Southampton.

The building formerly housed the Freemantle Social Club, which closed a decade ago in 2014.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "On Monday, August 5, at approximately 7.30 PM, firefighters from St Mary’s Fire Station responded to reports of smoke emanating from a derelict building on Waterloo Road in Southampton.

"Upon arrival, the crews quickly assessed the situation and equipped themselves with breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze.

"Using hose reels and jets, they were able to bring the fire under control. To clear the building of smoke, a ventilation fan was deployed.

"The incident was handed over to police before the stop message came in at 8 pm."

Hampshire police has been contacted for more information.

In January, the same building was set ablaze. Police arrested a 73-year-old man from Southampton on suspicion of arson. 

It is not yet clear if the two incidents are linked or if police are launching an investigation after Monday night's fire.
