Anti-racists are set to hold a demonstration in Southampton ahead of protest due to take place on Wednesday night.

Southampton Stand Up To Racism is set to host its counter-protest at The Peace Fountain in East Park, Southampton at 7pm.

It comes as two demonstrations are planned in the city following the fatal stabbing of three children in Southport.

A list of protests set to take place across the country on Wednesday night has been posted on Telegram including one organised in the city centre.

But in a Facebook post on Monday, Southampton Stand Up To Racism said: "Counter-protest to far-right demo at UK immigration offices.

"There is a potential for the far-right to escalate this into violence. Prioritise your safety above all else.

"If you do not feel comfortable, avoid the area from 7pm onwards."

Religious leaders and campaigners have told the Daily Echo they do not want to see unrest in the city.

A Telegram post advertising the rally said: “Wednesday night lads, they wont stop coming until you tell them…mask up.”

Separate posts on Facebook suggest another protest is to be held next weekend.

Those attending are being told to wear ‘England tops or St George’s cross’ and have been told to ‘help us awaken the lion on the south coast’.

Another protest appears to be planned in Portsmouth on Wednesday night, days after far-right campaigners gathered in the city's Guildhall at the weekend.

Stand Up To Racism's counter-protest is taking place just weeks after the group took to the streets to march along Above Bar Street for Refugee Week.

Campaigners were seen walking through the city centre with drums and banners including one with the words "refugees welcome".
