A teenager has been arrested after two men were beaten with a wooden table leg.

Two men in their 20s and 30s were walking along Starboard Way at 9.35pm on Saturday, August 4, when they were approached by a group of males who attempted to steal rucksacks from the pair.

The group were then joined by two further people on mopeds and one on a bicycle.

Hampshire Constabulary said that both men were then assaulted with a wooden table leg, causing them serious injuries.

The man in his 20s sustained serious injuries to his head and the man in his 30s suffered serious injuries to his face and jaw.

Both were taken to hospital for treatment.

A third man, who is in his 40s, sustained minor injuries to his arm.

On Thursday, a police spokesperson confirmed a 17-year-old has now been arrested in connection with the assault.

A spokesperson said: "We have now arrested a 17-year-old boy from Southampton on suspicion of robbery, racially/religiously aggravated wounding/actual bodily harm.

"He has also been arrested on suspicion of two counts of racially/religiously aggravated wounding/grievous bodily harm.

"He remains in police custody at the current time."
