Two men were caught on CCTV stealing from a recycling centre in the New Forest, police said.

One man was seen climbing into an open top container labelled 'iron and steel' at the recycling centre in Pennington, passing items to the other who began putting htem into a number of duffle bags.

It happened late last night.

They were then seen to flee the area on foot via a fence next to the main gate and towards Milford Road. 

It comes after a CCTV operator in the local area was alerted to two people wandering the Efford waste recycling centre on Milford Road at approximately 10.25pm, having gained access via a fence at the rear of the site.

Officers were deployed to the scene and carried out a number of extensive area searches; locating two men matching the descriptions provided by the CCTV operator at the junction of Milford Road and the entrance to the waste site. 

A spokesperson from the police said: "The men were both detained for the purposes of a search and were subsequently arrested. 

"A 34-year-old man and a 36-year-old man, both from New Milton, were arrested on suspicion of burglary other than dwelling with intent to steal.

"They remain in custody at this time."
