A cruise ship came to a stop in the Solent shortly after leaving Southampton on Tuesday evening.

Caribbean Princess came to a stop off the coast of the Isle of Wight at around 6pm on Tuesday after a passenger suffered a medical emergency.

A helicopter was seen to circle the ship before landing on the vessel, which is operated by Princess Cruises.

Sandown Lifeboat and the Coastguard helicopter from Lee-on-the-Solent are among those understood to be called to the incident.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: "At approximately 6pm on Tuesday 13 August 2024, Lee-On-Solent Coastguard helicopter and Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team were sent to extract a casualty from the Caribbean Princess.

"The patient was later transferred to an ambulance."

The ship was seen to halt its course off the coast of Ryde, on the north east of the island.

Caribbean Princess left Southampton at 4.30pm on Tuesday, en route to Iceland, and is due back in the city on August 29.

As of Wednesday morning, she is anchored off the coast of Falmouth in Cornwall.

This incident on board Caribbean Princess comes just a month after a medical emergency on board her sister ship, Regal Princess.

The ship, which had over 3,000 passengers onboard, was diverted to Falmouth having left Southampton a day earlier.

The Falmouth lifeboat piloted the boat to Pendennis Point, where it then evacuated a sick passenger.

The RNLI and Princess Cruises have been contacted by the Echo for comment.
