A car park in Southampton city centre will close tonight due to planned protests.

Southampton City Council will close Grosvenor Square multi-storey car park from 5pm tonight (Wednesday).

No details about the planned protest have been revealed.

It comes a week after around 400 anti-racism protestors gathered to face off against a small group wearing England flags in Grosvenor Square.

Two men have this week been jailed after attending the protest - one for charging at a police officer and another for bringing a knuckle duster.

Today, the council have alerted residents on X that the car park will be closed from 5pm

In the post the council stated: “As usual we are working with the police, communities and neighbouring councils to understand any planned protest activities.

“As a precaution, we have made the decision to close the Grosvenor Square MSCP from 17:00 today.”

It is understood by the Echo that an anti-immigration protest is planned to be held in the city on Saturday.

A spokesperson from Southampton City Council also told the Echo: “We are collaborating with the police and neighbouring communities to monitor activities.

"However, the information currently available is insufficient to assess any planned protests.

"As a precautionary measure in light of recent events, we have decided to close the car park."
