Plans to turn part of a commercial site in Southampton into eight one-bedroom flats have been unveiled.

Salisbury-based Aycer Homes has submitted an application relating to a  three-storey building at 1,2 and 3 College Place, which is opposite the city's crown court.

Part of the ground floor is occupied by a firm of funeral directors that is due to vacate the building later this year.

A supporting statement that accompanies the proposal says the upper parts of the building house office suites that were vacant when the applicant bought the freehold of the property.

It adds: "For the avoidance of doubt, the hairdressing salon within part of the ground floor does not form part of this prior approval application."

The statement says the proposed flats are likely to be occupied by a total of 16 people.

"Compared to the occupation by the funeral director and the office employees that could occupy the first and second floor accommodation, it represents a material reduction in movements to and from the building.

"The property is in a highly sustainable location, within Southampton’s defined city centre, with good access to all amenities and facilities close by."
