A hospital has said it takes security "very seriously" after a burglar wore a mask and gloves while stealing a laptop. 

Alexander Slowik was jailed for two years last week after he stole the equipment from the Royal South Hants Hospital in Southampton. 

The court heard how he was spotted on CCTV reaching for a mask and gloves before a female patient spotted him walking up the X-ray reception corridor. 

He was arrested at the scene and later pleaded guilty to burglary, as well as a series of other unrelated offences.

Now a spokesperson for NHS Property Services, which runs the hospital on Brintons Terrace, has responded to the sentencing. 

They said: "NHS Property Services is unable to comment on individual cases, however we take security very seriously, and work closely with our customers to ensure a safe environment for our NHS colleagues enabling them to deliver excellent patient care."

Slowik pleaded guilty to another count of burglary as well as possession of amphetamine and breaching a conditional discharge, two counts of theft, criminal damage, assault, engaging in threatening or abusive behaviour and possession of a sharp-pointed article.
