A leadership transition is set to take place at a privately-owned boutique hotel in the New Forest.

Lance Bartlett, general manager of Stanwell House in Lymington, and the hotel manager, his wife Lisa, are returning to their native South Africa.

Mr Bartlett's replacement is Josie Clare, who is taking over later this month.

He said: "I'm immensely proud of what we've accomplished, transforming this historic property into a leading boutique hotel. While its bittersweet to leave, I'm excited about returning to my roots in Africa. 

"I'm thrilled to appoint Josie Clare as my successor. Her experience and vision will undoubtedly take Stanwell House to new heights."

The owners of Stanwell House, Maryanne and Calum Maclean, praised the Bartletts for their contribution to the hotel and two businesses in nearby Brockenhurst.

They said: "We'd like to thank Lance and Lisa for their fantastic support and efforts over the last 16 years in getting Stanwell House, the Snakecatcher pub, and Albero up and running on behalf of ourselves.

"They will be missed but we wish them well in their new and exciting challenge ahead."

Josie Clare has a background in hospitality management, having worked with the Harbour Hotels Group and most recently the Avington Park estate in Winchester, where she was general manager.

Her Avington role involved overseeing the renowned stately home and its self-catering properties. 

She said: "I'm thrilled to take the reins at Stanwell House, with a commitment to providing exceptional service and a unique experience to all ts guests. The New Forest holds a special place in my heart and I'm excited to contribute to its charm and hospitality."

Lymington is a busy yachting haven that is also renowned for its Georgian town centre.

Former residents include author Leslie Thomas, Vicar of Dibley star Emma Chambers, and Olympic sailing hero Sir Ben Ainslie.

Stanwell House underwent an extensive multi-million-pound refurbishment project before reopening to the public at the end of 2022.

Speaking at the time Mr Bartlett said: "We’re really excited to be opening our doors and welcoming back guests to the hotel. This is the result of months of hard work for so many people.

"We want to give a special thanks to the local Lymington community, who have been so supportive."
