A man was left paralysed from the waist down after a crash with a vehicle transporter on the M27. 

Southampton Magistrates' Court heard how Thome Tauro was left seriously injured after the crash near Rownhams services. 

He had been driving a blue Kia Sportage on May 25, 2023, when he was involved in a crash with a Scania P410, driven by Peter Lister. 

His car collided with the barrier, the court was told on Tuesday.

Emergency services closed two lanes of the westbound carriageway between junctions four (M3) and three (M271) while they rescued the man in his 50s. 

Police said at the time that his injuries were thought to be serious but not life-threatening.

Lister has now been charged with causing serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving. 

The 53-year-old pleaded not guilty at Southampton Magistrates' Court on Tuesday and was released on unconditional bail. 

A trial is now due to take place with Lister next set to appear via video link for a pre-trial hearing on September 20, accompanied by his solicitor.

The court was told how Lister had been driving a car transporter from his hometown of Leeds to Southampton when the incident occurred at 12.08pm. 

Prosecutor, David Finney said a blue Kia had overtaken Lister's lorry before pulling in front of him.

The crash then took place with the car colliding with the barrier and the lorry veering in the opposite direction. 

National Highways warned motorists at the time of three miles of congestion with half an hour delays. 

All lanes reopened just after 3pm that day. 

The prosecutor added: "This is a case that the crown would say is suitable for summary trial."

Lister, of Aberfield Gardens, Leeds was unrepresented in court and spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, address and to confirm his understanding of the proceedings.
