A busy road plagued by roadworks is set to shut for six weeks.

Allington Lane will close between Oaktree Park and Itchen Valley Country Park from September 16 to October 28.

The footway will be resurfaced, and other improvements will take place for six weeks.

A temporary pedestrian walkway will be created while the footpath is closed, and access for businesses and residents will be maintained.

It comes after a bout of roadworks in August as teams from Hampshire County Council completed carriageway repairs.

Speaking on the latest round of closures, Cllr Steve Broomfield, who represents Fair Oak, said: “I've been speaking to the planned maintenance team and the relevant cabinet member to investigate ways the closure could be less severe.

"But the road is too narrow to allow safe vehicular access while pedestrians and workforce are present.

“Additionally, a compound needs to be established for equipment, storage, and welfare facilities for staff and there isn't sufficient space.

“Added to that, creating an off-site compound adds to cost and time.

“On behalf of Hampshire Highways, I can only apologise for the disruption this will cause.

“The six weeks is a worst-case estimate; hopefully it will be quicker.”
