An ancient building could be transformed into a garage and MoT centre under proposals to breathe new life into part of Hampshire's industrial heritage.

Gosport Borough Council has received an application relating to The Works, a centuries-old structure that escaped bomb damage and post-war redevelopment.

The historic building occupies a long, rectangular site between High Street and Mumby Road.

A design and access statement that accompanies the application describes the trading that took place in the 18th and 19th centuries.

"The back areas of the high street were filled with workshops, warehouses, and other buildings which have been left vacant, in poor condition, and even removed in some cases, making space for new developments such as flats and car parks."

The statement says The Works is one of the few surviving buildings from the early industrial development that took place in the town.

"It is one of the areas which did not experience bomb damage and redevelopment, retaining a high degree of archaeological importance, as identified within the High Street Conservation Area Appraisal.

"It is formed of two industrial warehouses, dating back to the 19th century, with suggestions of earlier origins.

"The Works previously functioned as a warehouse for various shops and businesses but at present it isn't associated with any shop on the High Street and doesn't have a formal use."

A public notice outlining the proposed development has been published by the council, which will determine the application.
