Residents in Mansbridge have shared photos of snakes that have been spotted swimming in the River Itchen.
To the surprise of many around the city, Southampton appears to have a healthy population of grass snakes, particularly around the riverside area.
Grass snakes do live in wetland areas but often slither into gardens, particularly if there is a pond or water feature nearby.

The images come after a video of a snake swimming in the River Itchen near The White Swan pub caused a panic when it was posted on Facebook.

However, swimmers, paddle borders and kayakers have no need to fear. Hampshire Wildlife Trust explained the snakes are not a danger to people.
The pictures above have been shared by a Mansbridge resident who lives close to the River Itchen.
She says she often finds grass snakes in her garden and has even found a baby snake.
