A man whose car was shunted into his neighbour's living room has spoken out about the ordeal.

Hamble Lane has been partially closed since the early hours of this morning (September 10) after the shocking collision, which has written off Allan Vincent's Volkswagen CC and left it propping up the house next door.

A 22-year-old man from Locks Heath has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and is currently in police custody.

While police say no-one was injured in the worrying incident, which happened at around 12.40am, the 53-year-old has spoken of the impact it has had on him and his neighbour.

He said: "I was in bed getting ready to go to sleep, but there was a massive thud which shook the house.

"I came outside and saw a mess; my car was in my neighbour's house and I tried to calm down my neighbour's wife, who had four kids in the house at the time."

Another neighbour, who Allan described as 'lovely', took in his two children and his neighbour's four children, while emergency services dealt with what happened.

With the back of the car completely mangled, and the front wedged into his neighbour's bay window, the vehicle has had to be written off.

He was in Exeter on a work trip when he got the call about what happened.

He said: "My wife called me in hysterics and said I needed to come home as soon as possible."

Nicky Vincent, Allan's wife, said their two children were "distraught" after what happened.

The 44-year-old said: "Our children said they did not want to live on this road anymore after the incident happened.

"The speeds at which people drive down this road at night is unbelievable.

"This road is a liability; it is dreadful."

The road closure, between Portsmouth Road and Pound Road, caused heavy delays during rush hour, which eased as the morning wore on.
