Bosses at Southampton Airport have said pilots could be dazzled under new plans to build 862 solar panels - unless strict conditions are put in place.

YLEM Energy wants to put in the panels on two CopperVision buildings in Ensign Way, Hamble, around 6.6 miles away from the airport as the crow flies.

According to the planning application, they would be split to 219 panels on one building, and 643 on another.

Southampton Airport said the installation could “conflict” with rules in place to keep the airport safe.

For that reason, it is proposing a planning condition that “no development shall take place until a glint and glaze assessment has been submitted and approved by the planning authority”.

In a public letter, it said this is because of the potential impact on pilots from glare and dazzling from the panels.

The letter suggested a condition that said: “No subsequent alterations to the approved renewable energy scheme are to take place unless submitted to and approved in writing by the local planning authority.

“[This is ] due to the potential for reflection from solar photovoltaic (SPV) systems to cause glare, dazzling pilots or leading them to confuse reflections with aeronautical lights.”

The airport said it would not object if the condition it wants is put on the planning application.

The proposed solar panels would be monocrystalline with a silver frame, installed flush with pitched metal roofs.

The application, which will be decided on October 14, has attracted 30 responses from residents and public bodies.

In support of the application, David Strain said the proposal would contribute to net zero emissions and sustainable energy use.
