Southampton has been home to an alarming number of snake sightings in recent years - so here is our list of the most notable in the area.

To cope with our cold winters, all of our native species of snakes go into hibernation for the coldest months, typically from October to March.

Snakes are a rare sight in the UK, but can be spotted in the wild or in gardens during the warmer months – with many being spotted in Southampton.

Snake escapes home in Chandler's Ford – August 24, 2022

Speaking at the time, RSPCA scientific officer, Evie Button said: “Snakes are excellent escape artists and will take the opportunity of a gap in an enclosure door, or a loose-fitting lid to make a break for it.”

The 31-year-old University of Southampton employee said: “I’m an animal lover so I knew I couldn’t just leave him where he was - he could’ve been run over by a cyclist or attacked by a dog or fox.”
