Brand new production images give us a first look at the epic large-scale production of War Horse heading to Mayflower Theatre next month. 

The National Theatre's acclaimed production, based on Michael Morpurgo's beloved novel, comes to Southampton from October 8 to 19.

Ground-breaking puppetry work brings breathing, galloping, charging, horses to thrilling life on stage in a multi award-winning spectacle.

At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France.  He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land.  Albert, who remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Though still not old enough to enlist he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

Sir Michael Morpurgo said of the show created from his book, which then spurned a Hollywood blockbuster: "I realised that the team had created something magical. It was wonderful; history being told supremely well, but also the frailty, idiocy and the joy of humanity."
