A care home manager has been announced as a finalist for a prestigious national award.

Matthew Smith, general manager at Care UK’s Parker Meadows in Fareham, has been announced as a finalist in the ‘Care Home Manager of the Year’ category in this year’s National Care Awards 2024.

The awards recognise teams and individuals that epitomise excellence, innovation, dedication and outstanding contributions within the care sector.

The winners will be announced at a prestigious ceremony at the Platinum Suite, London, in November.

Judges praised Matthew for providing strong leadership at Parker Meadows, bringing an admirable level of understanding and flexibility to the home since taking up the role of general manager in 2021.

Matthew regularly eats lunch with residents at the Redlands Lane care home to chat informally and hear their views and believes in fostering a culture where everyone’s voice matters – including residents, relatives and team members.

Commenting on his nomination, Matthew said: “It’s an incredible honour to be shortlisted for this award and to be in this role and lead a fantastic team who ensure Parker Meadows is not just a care home, but a place where residents feel happy, respected, and truly at home.

“This shortlisting is a reflection of the amazing effort and passion that everyone here brings to their roles every day.

“I’m proud and honoured to have been nominated for this award and look forward to celebrating this achievement with the residents, regardless of the outcome.”

Judges were equally impressed by Matthew’s proactive approach to supporting the team, offering hands-on support in all aspects of the home – from hosting activities to working in the kitchen.

As part of his role, Matthew works closely with relatives - particularly those who were full-time carers before their loved ones moved to the home - by offering them the opportunity to be actively involved in their relative’s care.

Commenting on Matthew's work in the home, a relative of one of the residents at Parker Meadows said: “Not only has Matthew established the home into what it is today, but he has also developed the team into an effective, hardworking, gelled unit who work in a relaxed, enjoyable environment.

“Matt should be proud that he has grown into an excellent all-round manager, utilising his outstanding skills and his own down-to-earth hard graft to establish a care home and care team that can easily be described as a leading example within the industry.”
