A resident is raising the alarm after cracks started appearing on his road in Millbrook.

Michael Saunders, 64, says a hole several feet deep on recently-resurfaced Nutfield Court is an "accident waiting to happen".

It first appeared a week ago and cracks have also formed at the side of the road.

He is now begging Balfour Beatty to take action before disaster strikes.

Michael worries if left untreated it could result in a sink hole.

“It’s an accident waiting to happen," he said, "people drive up the road every day and it can’t be any good.

“I’ve been calling Balfour Beatty for nearly a week, and I can’t get through to anyone, it’s like they’ve botched the initial job and don’t want to come back and do it again.

Before the current issues, the road was resurfaced two years ago after concerns were raised over an uneven surface.

When inspecting the road surface, Michael used a branch to try and measure the depth of the hole, but it didn’t touch the bottom.

“I just can’t believe it’s been allowed to deteriorate like this,” he said.

“I’ve got a campervan, and I don’t want to go over it as the vehicle is really heavy and I’m worried the wheel could fall through and get stuck.

“It’s a very serious issue and there’s no need for an accident to happen but at the moment it looks like it’s a case of when it will happen – not if.”

In a statement, a spokesperson said they first received a defect report on September 11, and added: "Having now received the location of the road defect, Balfour Beatty Living Places will return to inspect the reported issue today, ascertain the cause of the defect and ensure that it is repaired as soon as possible.

"We would like to thank the local resident for raising their concerns and would encourage others to continue to report potholes and defects via the Southampton City Council website."
