Planners are studying an application to transform part of a former defence site that included a private station used by Queen Victoria.

A marine services company is seeking consent to upgrade a 90-year-old boat house at Victoria Quay in Weevil Lane, Gosport.

The building is part of the former Royal Clarence Yard, which kept the navy supplied with provisions from 1828 onwards.

A design and access statement that accompanies the application says the railway line to Gosport was extended for the benefit of Queen Victoria, who often visited the Solent area.

Instead of disembarking at Gosport station, the monarch was able to alight near the Royal Yacht.

"During Victoria’s reign there were some key additions - including the private Royal Railway Station. This brought with it a new waiting room and landing stage. The Tank Store was expanded to include 'Her Majesty’s Landing Furniture Store', where the red carpet was stored."

Built between 1930 and 1933, the boat house is owned by UK Docks Marine Services South.

"Their Gosport base provides a comprehensive service for new build, refit, maintenance and repair services for commercial and private vessels of up to 40 metres length overall or 180 tonnes. It is proposed to refurbish and reclad the building to form accommodation for visiting crew."

A public notice outlining the scheme has been published by Gosport Borough Council, which will decide the application.
