Southampton City Libraries is urging residents to use its free home delivery service, which now operates using eco-friendly transport.

The service, which delivers books to the homes of those unable to visit libraries due to health or disability reasons, is now using electric cargo bikes or vans for deliveries.

Funded by the Solent Future Transport Zone, the initiative carries out a variety of sustainable transport trials across the Solent area. The home delivery service offers a selection of thousands of books, including larger print options and audiobooks, which are typically delivered monthly.

When customers register, library staff will call to discuss preferred reading materials and reserve appropriate titles. The books are then delivered and collected once read.

This initiative aims to make reading more accessible while promoting environmentally-friendly practices. More information about the service can be found on the Southampton City Libraries website or by contacting the library directly.

Councillor Lorna Fielker, leader of Southampton City Council said: "Our Home Library Service is designed to support people’s wellbeing in the city. This fantastic, hassle-free green service means that everyone can enjoy all that our award-winning libraries have to offer. With thousands of titles to choose from, there is something for everyone."

One user of the service said: "I have had a very good service from the Home Library Service. The selection of books has always been varied which makes them more interesting. The service allows those who are housebound, or nearly so, to have another dimension to their lives. It is a life saver for the disadvantaged."
