A mentoring programme supporting care leavers is launching in Southampton.
Goal 17, an organisation helping young people across the UK, will soon be offering support to local care leavers.
The programme, recognised nationally and shortlisted for an award at the European Diversity Awards, is looking for volunteers.
Brian Hammersley, a mentor with Goal 17, said: "We want to shine a light on the incredible potential these young people have and show them that there’s a community behind them, cheering them on.
"Mentorship is more than just guidance – it’s about giving someone the confidence to dream big and the tools to achieve those dreams."
Goal 17’s Founder, Fran Boorman, said: "We’re looking for volunteers who want to be part of something truly special.
"This is your chance to make a difference that will ripple through our community for generations."
Care leavers, often only 18, face many challenges as they transition out of the care system and start living independently. Without family support, they often struggle with issues like homelessness, unemployment, and social isolation.
Goal 17’s programme aims to provide the emotional and practical support these young people need. The organisation emphasises that volunteers don’t need prior experience, just a willingness to help.
Mentors are asked to give one to two hours of their time each month, providing guidance and support to care leavers. The programme is a chance for Southampton residents to make a difference in the lives of young people in their community.
Goal 17’s expansion to Southampton is a call to action for the local community to rally behind care leavers and support them in creating brighter futures.
