Approval has been granted to install 862 solar panels on two buildings despite concerns over them dazzling pilots flying to and from Southampton.

Eastleigh Borough Council has granted ‘prior approval’ for the YLEM Renewables Ltd application to install 862 solar panels across two CooperVision buildings in Ensign Way, Hamble-le-Rice – 6.6 miles away from the airport as the crow flies.

However, before any work starts, some conditions must be met.

One of them is Southampton Airport’s request for a ‘glint and glare’ assessment due to the “potential” for reflection that could cause “glare, dazzling pilots or leading them to confuse reflections with aeronautical lights”.

In the council officers’ report, the public representation from Southampton Airport said it was “unable” to comment on the application because “insufficient” information was provided around their main reflection concern.

However, it does not have an “aerodrome safeguarding” objection to the plan as long as the assessment is carried out.

According to the planning application form, 219 solar panels would be installed on Building 1 and 643 on Building 2.

The panels would be monocrystalline with a silver frame, installed flush with pitched metal roofs.

The environmental health department said the monocrystalline panels are “unlikely” to cause “significant” glare or reflective nuisance to surrounding areas.
