A £1.2m project to fix Stokes Bay's damaged seawall has been completed.

The work, which was finished on time and on budget, has reopened Alverbank East Car Park and the promenade to the public after several years.

The project, which saw the site reopened on September 26, was a joint effort by Gosport Borough Council and Hampshire County Council.

They worked together to replace the 135-metre section of seawall, which had been battered by several storms.

The 17-week project, carried out by Gosport’s coastal management service, Coastal Partners, and contractor Suttle Projects, also included improvements to car park drainage and a new handrail along the promenade.

A successful joint bid for local levy funding secured £759,317 for the project, with Gosport Borough Council adding £450,000 and Hampshire £50,000.

Gosport Borough Council Leader Cllr Peter Chegwyn said: "The successful completion of this joint project to fix the damaged seawall means Stokes Bay Road and its neighbouring area is now protected from stormy weather, now and into the future.

"This is a great example of strong partnership work to successfully secure outside funding and complete such important work to preserve our coastal areas."
