A set of steps near a bus stop have been labelled an “accident waiting to happen” by a concerned resident.

Pamela West voiced her fears in relation to the situation in a Southampton suburb at the city council’s annual court leet ceremony.

She made a representation over the state of the steps leading up to the bus stop in Cooper’s Lane, Woolston, which is used by services going across the Itchen Bridge towards the city centre.

Earlier this year the local authority carried out improvement works in the adjacent Colonnade car park and disabled access ramp.

Ms West said it appeared the steps had been overlooked.

Speaking at court leet in the council chamber on Tuesday, October 1, she said: “The steps are in a sorry state and a serious accident is just waiting to happen.

“Some of the slabs have been dislodged and are jutting out at an angle causing a serious trip hazard to any pedestrian going up the steps to catch a bus, especially if they are in a hurry if there is a bus at the bus stop or they are partially sighted.

“Coming down the steps is also hazardous due to the angles of protruding steps and shadows on a bright day.

“This is in normal daylight hours. In the evening when it is dark it is more difficult to see the slabs which are protruding and the steps are an increased hazard to any person using them.”

Ms West told the court leet jury she had noticed that morning that the slabs on the right-hand side going up to the bus stop had become even more displaced, increasing the danger to the public.

She added: “The state of the steps is such that this is just an accident waiting to happen.

“Can anything be done to remove this hazard and repair the steps?”

The jury of civic representatives accepted her presentment, meaning it will now be considered by the city council, with an update expected on any proposed actions at a future cabinet meeting.

Earlier this year the council invested in the Colonnade car park in Portsmouth Road, Woolston, to create a travel hub.

The work delivered additional facilities for e-scooter and bike hire, electric vehicle charging and dedicated car-sharing scheme spaces.

Improvements were also carried out on the subway, which links the car park with the Grade II-listed Woolston Railway Station.

The steps highlighted in Ms West’s court leet presentment provide a direct route between Cooper’s Lane and the southern end of the subway.
