High winds of up to 55mph could be strong enough to see a tornado develop in Southampton, researchers have warned.
The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) has stated that much of southern England and Wales could see gusty winds between 50 and 55mph, occasional lightning and even hail throughout this afternoon and into the evening.
It has issued a convective discussion, valid until midnight, warning that "a tornado or two" could develop across southern England and Wales.

In a statement, a spokesperson for TORRO said: “A pronounced shortwave trough will move north-northeast through this afternoon and evening, with clusters of showers and a few thunderstorms accompanying it, especially this evening into the first part of tonight.
“Some stronger cells may produce hail up to 1cm diameter and squally winds.
“Some backed low-level flow ahead of the trough could allow a tornado or two to develop, most likely in coastal counties.”
They added: “Further inland, instability will decrease, and whilst some squally gusts may remain possible, the tornado risk should decrease.”
It comes as the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in Southampton and Hampshire this evening.
