Security is set to be beefed up at Daedalus airport in Fareham after the site has been illegally used for car meets and traveller activity has increased in the area.
Plans for the new security measures at Faraday Business Park have been approved by Fareham Borough Council to stop anti-social behaviour and illegal car meet nuisances.
This comes after a sharp rise in unauthorised traveller encampments around the airport site as well as a number of illegal car meets in the northern zone of Faraday Business Park.
Currently, the council employs a security contractor to undertake intermittent patrols across this area costing about £10,000 per year.
New 1.2-metre security gates spanning Spitfire Way and have been green-lit by councillors, pending planning permission, at the executive meeting on October 7.
The council also approved a standalone security hut costing up to £35,000.
Councillor Simon Martin said these measures were needed to stop anti-social behaviour and potential health and safety risks to attendees and park occupiers.
A previous executive meeting approved plans to purchase the land to do this project. The plan to improve the security of the site can now go ahead, said Cllr Martin.

Former leader of Fareham Borough Council, Sean Woodward, who often flies from the airfield, said: “I think these measures are very much needed – there have been incidents of people driving in and messing around along with a number of unauthorised encampments in the area.
“With regards to car meets, its difficult to patrol as many of the businesspeople need vehicle access but I’m confident in these new measures.
“I don’t hold a pilot licence but accompany other pilots from Solent in their aircrafts when I can.”
Council documents read at the executive meeting state that: “These measures aim to improve security on the site, providing a visual and when required, physical deterrent to unauthorised visitors to the estate.”
The meeting heard how the council has annual problems with travellers in the borough.
As reported in the Echo in May, unauthorised visitors had to be removed from Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Park which adjoins the northern zone of Faraday Business Park.
