A landlord has slammed the city council after his 30 tenants were forced to pile up rubbish in their kitchen after two consecutive missed bin collections.

John Hopgood said he feels "ignored" by the council after the scheduled fortnightly collections at his house of multiple occupation in Thorold Road, Bitterne, were missed for the past month.

It has resulted in rats and foxes being attracted to the mound of black bags piling up next to the bins, the landlord said, and residents are now being forced to pile rubbish in their shared kitchen or their own rooms.

The 78-year-old said: “I feel like I have been completely ignored by the council – I have phoned and emailed to report and had no acknowledgement.

“I even went down to the civic offices to report the fact it had been missed – I have had no apology, no communication all while my residents suffer the consequences living amongst their own rubbish.

“Other people walking past see the rubbish piled up and overflowing and have used it as an opportunity to leave some of their own waste there.

“Now that just adds insult to injury and wouldn’t be the case if the council came and took the bins away every other week as they should.”

The landlord said that the bins were so full they could not be properly shut, which resulted in foxes pulling the rubbish from the bins and spreading it across the road.

John added: “The annoying part that has really got me up-tight is the fact that the council have not done anything despite me and tenants reporting it.

“We pay our money to the council so I think they have an obligation to get this shifted as soon as possible."

In response, a council spokesperson said they are investigating why these collections have been missed.
