A new support group for autistic adults is set to launch in Gosport.

The group, run by the charity Autism Hampshire, will begin meeting on Tuesday, October 29, and will provide a safe space for autistic adults to connect, share interests, and acquire new skills.

Meeting every fortnight from 10am to 12pm, the group welcomes any autistic adult over the age of 18, including those awaiting or forgoing formal diagnosis.

Autism Hampshire, which operates similar groups in 13 other locations across the county, is seeking volunteers to help with the new community initiatives.

These comprise a variety of formats, including social, skills-based, and online groups, catering to diverse interests from wildlife walks to crafts.

While some groups maintain a specific focus, most are member-led and encompass a broad range of activities such as games, crafts, and discussions.

The charity also offers a wealth of additional services beyond the community groups.

These include autism-focused training, supported living services, an information, advice and guidance team, a local autism directory, and an autism alert programme for emergency services.

For those keen to become part of the new Gosport group or to learn more about the array of resources available, further details can be obtained by contacting serendipity@autismhampshire.org.uk or calling 01489 880881 (ext. 225).

Serendipity coordinator Sophie Palmer said: "Being autistic myself, I know the challenges autistic people face every single day. It can be overwhelming and exhausting which is why these groups are so important.

"They give people somewhere that they can feel safe and be themselves without having to mask. They are about making friends and simply sharing a space with other people for a few hours – whether that is talking about a recent experience or just playing board games. We are all here for each other."

An existing member said: "I love the group. It is honestly the highlight of my week. I love how comfortable I feel to be surrounded by likeminded and supportive people.

"I love chatting to others and making friends as I struggle to socialise and leave my house. This group has been incredible and I’m so lucky to attend! Couldn’t recommend it enough."
