A New Forest charity targeted by thieves has been given more than £35,000 to help it recover from the break-in.

The Minstead Trust, which supports people with learning disabilities, has been contacted by 350 wellwishers since burglars made off with tools and vehicles valued at around £50,000.

Monetary gifts from the public have been matched by support from businesses that have offered donations and discounts.

The Trust has been given new CCTV by Forward Securities and has also received a "significant" number of tools from B&Q.

As reported in the Daily Echo, the thieves targeted its headquarters, Minstead Lodge, near Lyndhurst, on the night of October 2-3.

Their haul included chainsaws and lawnmowers, plus a small truck used at nearby Furzey Gardens, which are open to the public.

The Trust's chief executive, Adam Dodd, said: "The response from our local community to this shocking theft has been hugely uplifting. We are so thankful to everyone who has helped us in this difficult time.

"We have been overwhelmed by the gifts and messages of support we have received from hundreds of people over the last week.

"This was an unsettling and upsetting incident for the people we support, so for them to then see how much people value their work and place in society is very special.

"It's evidence of the special community that surrounds Minstead Trust, all working together to break down the barriers in society that stop people with learning disabilities thriving."

The Trust helps people with learning disabilities to learn new skills and become more independent, enabling them to lead happier and healthier lives.

Speaking shortly after the theft Mr Dodd said: "Important day opportunities sessions were disrupted and maintenance of our grounds has had to stop. This directly impacts the daily lives of dozens of vulnerable people.

"More importantly, I know how unsettling this has been for staff, volunteers, and particularly some of the people we support.

"It's hard for us to comprehend why someone would steal crucial equipment that is used by people to build their skills and improve their lives.

"My thanks go to our maintenance team in particular for their strength and attitude throughout this really difficult few days.

"Minstead Trust has been supporting people with learning disabilities in the New Forest and beyond for almost 40 years, and this is one of the more unsettling moments we have faced.

"Our insurance will go some way to covering our substantial costs, but there will inevitably be a significant shortfall and further costs."
