Controversial plans could see an extra floor added to an apartment block overlooking a marina.

Applicant Atlas Planning Group has applied to add an extra floor to Alexandra Wharf in Ocean Village, which would see an additional four new two-bedroom flats built.

But residents have criticised the plans for the building, which is currently eight storeys where the extension would be, with one saying they are "horrified".

A previous application for four four-bed flats was refused in December 2022 because of the "design and character" of the building. The decision was appealed but with no success.

This new design has been developed and was sent to the council October 2, and within two weeks has already received ten objections.

In a letter to the council, one resident stated: “I am horrified that yet another application for this proposal has been put forward.

“The adding of another floor to an already completed building compromises the building structure and foundations, and has led to collapses of buildings over time.

“It may not happen overnight but it will be a ticking time bomb for all who live here if this was to go ahead.”

Carol Baggott, 47, a nurse who lives in the Alexandra Wharf apartments, said she was "worried" about the construction work.

She said: “I am worried actually if the works go ahead, that the noise will be unbearable.

“For me as a nurse especially, it could really affect my life. I need my rest.”

Shayne Locker, 68, said the plans were a "dangerous" idea.

He said: “I think on one hand it will provide more housing and bring more people to the area but then again building a new floor on top of an already existing building is very dangerous and a structural nightmare.”

Nala Pranjeet, who works in Ocean Village, complained about the impact of the scheme on the area.

The 36-year-old said: “I suppose a new floor couldn't hurt and there will always be people who need somewhere to live.

“However, the building work will ruin the nice views on the skyline which will be a pain.”
