People are being encouraged to take part in this year’s Great Coastal Birdwatch.

Running from October 19 until Saturday, November 3, the event celebrates the arrival of thousands of birds on the Solent’s mudflats and saltmarshes.

Organised by Bird Aware Solent, the two-week event asks people to log the different types of birds they see during an hour on the coast.

A special website, GreatCoastalBirdwatch.org, has been set up for this purpose. Last year, more than 100 species were spotted.

Bird Aware Solent is a partnership of 19 local authorities and wildlife organisations, working across the New Forest, Southampton Water, and more.

Ranger Eloise said: "The autumn migration of coastal birds to the Solent shoreline is an incredible phenomenon to witness and a very important legacy to protect. By telling people about the birds’ awe-inspiring journeys, we hope they’ll give birds the space they need to feed and rest without being disturbed."
