Bitterne Precinct is set to get a new lease of life with an "innovative" project set to transform the area.

The initiative, led by Southampton City Council and funded by contributions from housing developers under the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), is aiming to create a new 'Play & Park' destination.

The project will introduce new surfaced routes, play areas, exercise spaces, and green areas with trees, shrubs, and seating.

The initiative is expected to enhance the local environment and boost economic growth. Work is set to begin on October 21 and will last for approximately 12 weeks.

Cllr John Savage, cabinet member for Green City and Net Zero at Southampton City Council said: "After the 2022 public consultation, it was evident that there was a strong desire for an improved area that everyone could enjoy, as 50 per cent of the respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the current green space.

"Our aim with this innovative Urban Green Space project is to develop a versatile area that serves both residents and visitors. Through the thoughtful design of play areas, we seek to establish a space that appeals to people of all ages, encouraging outdoor activities and relaxation."
