Speeding drivers were caught racing through the New Forest in thick fog.

Officers from New Forest Heart Police were conducting speed checks when two drivers sped past at speeds exceeding 50mph.

One driver was caught at 51mph while the other was driving at 52mph, on roads with a speed limit of 40mph.

Both were slapped with fines by officers.

A spokesperson from the force said: “We are delighted to say that the vast majority of the drivers that went past us at Yew Tree Heath and Pig Bush car parks were staying well below the 40mph speed limit because of the poor visibility.

“But we did stop three vehicles that were going well over the limit.

“One driver was spoken to by our partners at Forestry England and the New Forest Roads Awareness Team.

“Two were issued with tickets for recording speeds of 51 and 52mph in a 40mph zone.

“Please stick to the speed limit across the Forest especially when visibility is so bad.

“This morning it was down to approximately 100 metres in places.”
