The cruise companies regularly docking in Southampton have been ranked based on their CO2 emissions.
These seven cruise companies regularly docked in the city and have emitted almost a combined 9,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide per nautical mile travelled.
The full rankings, per cruise line, is as follows:
- Disney Cruise Line – 1,481 kg
- Norwegian Cruise Line –1,413 kg
- Princess Cruises – 1,253 kg
- MSC Cruises – 1,229 kg
- Celebrity Cruises – 1,228 kg
- Cunard – 1,207 kg
- P&O Cruises – 1,108 kg
One way that cruise companies are making strides to be more sustainable is by fitting their ships with ‘shore power’ equipment.

Almost half of cruise vessels are now capable of connecting to shoreside electricity, helping to reduce emissions while docked.
However, the only UK cruise port with a plug-in berth is Southampton – which means while cruise emissions are lower in Southampton, that is not the case for much of the rest of the world.
The data has been provided by Which?, a UK consumer testing magazine.
