A fan has been slapped with a hefty fine after invading the pitch at St Mary's during Southampton's euphoric Championship play-off semi-final victory over West Bromwich Albion in May.

Liam Dwyer, of Pat Bear Close in Botley, admitted going onto the playing area at a football match during Saints' 3-1 victory over West Brom on May 17.

It is an offence under the Football (Offences) Act 1991 to enter the pitch during a designated football match without lawful authority.

District Judge Anthony Callaway fined the 27-year-old £450 during a hearing at Southampton Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Dwyer was also ordered to pay £85 in costs to the Crown Prosecution Service, and a £180 victim surcharge.

The £715 bill will need to be paid in full by November 19, court documents reveal.

The second leg win over West Brom set up Saints' date at Wembley with Leeds, which they eventually won to secure promotion back to the Premier League.

Thousands of fans gathered outside St Mary's ahead of the match, lighting flares and chanting as the teams arrived.

At the end of the match, fans spilled onto the pitch.
