A man has been left injured after a stabbing on a high street on Saturday night.

Emergency services rushed to Victoria Road in Woolston at around 8.45pm after the victim, a man in his 40s, was stabbed in the leg following an altercation.

He suffered a minor injury, and no arrests have been made.

But police do not believe a knife was used in the incident.

Forensics comb scene

Forensics officers were seen combing the area on Sunday morning searching for evidence, while one marked and one unmarked car were also spotted on the cordon.

A stretch of pavement outside Superdrug, near Woolston Mini Market and Hair Port barbers, was cordoned off and was the subject of police attention.

What appeared to be glass on the pavement was being photographed by an officer.

The businesses inside the cordon remained closed until the cordon was lifted just after 11.30am, with shutters down.

'It's very sad'

Reacting to the news, one Woolston resident said: "It's sad that these things can be allowed to happen, especially somewhere in front of shops and restaurants that you think would be quite busy at the weekend.

"I just hope the person involved is okay. It's very sad."

One onlooker added: "It's awful, I came walking down the road and wondered why the police car was parked up.

"Seeing something like this makes you think twice about coming to Woolston."

Speaking before the news of the stabbing was revealed, another person said: "Nobody knows what's happened, nobody has told us anything.

"I can't believe it really and if something serious has happened then it's quite worrying. I hope nobody has been seriously hurt."

A fourth person, who was on Woolston high street on Sunday morning, said: "I just can't believe it to be honest.

"The street is usually quite quiet at night so to have this happen is very shocking."
