A visionary new hairdressing salon thought to be the first of its kind in the region has opened its doors in Romsey.

The Coven, on Bell Street, is an all-inclusive safe space salon designed to provide services in a sensory-friendly environment.

It caters for customers with neurodiverse needs, such as autism, and also welcomes clients looking for vivid, alternative hairstyles.

Meeting the needs of neurodiverse children, young adults, and anyone who may find the bustling environment of traditional salons difficult to navigate, The Coven will feature quieter, calmer ‘sensory days’ with low lighting, reduced or no music, and private appointments to ensure a stress-free experience.

The Coven is owned by experienced award-winning hairdresser Verity Wall, who has built a reputation for her creativity, empathy, and commitment to making every client feel comfortable.

Her inspiration for The Coven stemmed from her experiences working with neurodiverse individuals and her own love for alternative, expressive styles.

Verity also owns and runs Belle Hair Boutique, the successful hair salon next door.

She said: "Although Belle Hair Boutique welcomes everyone, I began to notice how overwhelming the salon environment could be for some clients—especially those with sensory sensitivities.

“The sounds of hairdryers, voices, bright lights, and constant movement can create a sensory overload, and I would see how stressful it could be for not only the children, but also their parents. I wanted to create a space where clients could feel completely at ease, free from judgement or discomfort."

The Coven will also be the go-to destination for clients who want bold, vivid, and alternative hairstyles, specialising in everything from vibrant rainbow colours and platinum buzzcuts to mohawks, mullets, and gothic-inspired looks.

“If you know me, you know I’m a ‘goth girl’ at heart,” Verity adds. “I’ve always loved creating vivid, alternative looks, and The Coven allows me to really embrace that passion. Clients who want a more edgy, alternative vibe will love it here.”

The Coven launched last week with a Halloween themed party with live music from alternative band Bury Tomorrow.

On Saturday November 9, it'ss hosting a Special Educational Needs open day / drop in from 10am to 2pm.
