Police have broken up a Hampshire car meet which saw 'dangerous and anti-social driving' with more than 200 vehicles involved.

Last night police responded to concerns raised by the public. Hampshire police said the car meet began at Winchester Park & Ride just before 8.30pm.

The group dispersed and travelled towards the Petersfield area, finally congregating at Alton Retail Park on Mill Lane at around 10.30pm.

A spokesperson for the police said: "Officers attended to engage with the group and were able to successfully disperse the group safely away from the area to prevent any further escalation.

"Two vehicles – a yellow BMW and a white BMW – were both seized as a result, following the drivers of those vehicles contravening previous warnings provided to them around the nature of their driving behaviour.

"Our roads policing and investigations teams are working hard to collect and review all available footage, including CCTV and body worn video from our officers who attended, to identify those involved and consider any further offences they may have committed, in order for us to take the appropriate action."

A previous car meet on September 21 started at the East Winchester Park and Ride and crowds quickly moved on to Southampton, Eastleigh, Chandler's Ford, and Fareham and finally gathering at Southsea seafront shortly after midnight.

Around 500 people attended and several arrests have been made.
