The people of Southampton are encouraged to support businesses this Christmas.

Southampton City Council has revealed its plans for this year's festivities across the city, which will include live performances, festive markets, and more.

The council has said its plans will benefit "residents, visitors, and local businesses".

The Christmas market will be back this year and will be open between November 15, 2024, and January 5, 2025.

There will be the traditional German market, as well as bars, rides, and entertainment.

On the same weekend, there will also be the annual Countdown to Christmas event from November 15 to November 17.

The family event will bring live performances and music before the Christmas lights are switched on, at around 8pm on November 15.

Councillor Lorna Fielker, leader of Southampton City Council, said: "Christmas in Southampton is always a magical time, and I'm really excited about this year's offer.

"From free family fun and unforgettable experiences to creative workshops and activities, there is something for everyone.

"Southampton is the place to be this festive period – so bring your friends, families, and guests to join in the fun whilst supporting our businesses and local economy."

The council's toy appeal will also be back, and people are being asked to donate toys for all ages.

The appeal runs between November 15 and December 20.

Stephen Manion, executive director at Go! Southampton, said: "We can't wait to celebrate our Countdown to Christmas event weekender to kickstart the festive activity in the city.

"We encourage everyone to shop, eat, and explore local this Christmas – it's an important time to support local businesses in the city and enjoy Southampton's fantastic offer."

Father Christmas will also be meeting children at Tudor House and Garden on weekends between December 7 and December 23.

Other events include Westquay On Ice, which opens on November 22, and the Mayflower Theatre's pantomime Jack and The Beanstalk, which runs between December 14 and January 5.
