A new salon has opened in Romsey catering to people with neurodiverse needs.
The Coven, located on Bell Street, is believed to be the first in the area to provide a sensory-friendly environment for hairdressing services.
The salon aims to meet the needs of people with neurodiverse conditions such as autism, as well as clients interested in vibrant, alternative hairstyles.
The salon offers quieter, calmer sensory days with low lighting, reduced or no music, and private appointments.
This approach is designed to provide a stress-free experience for those who might find traditional salon settings overwhelming.
Owner and award-winning hairdresser Verity Wall, who has more than 20 years of experience in the industry, said her inspiration for The Coven stemmed from her experience of working with neurodiverse individuals.
She said: "Although Belle Hair Boutique welcomes everyone, I began to notice how overwhelming the salon environment could be for some clients—especially those with sensory sensitivities.
"The sounds of hairdryers, voices, bright lights, and constant movement can create a sensory overload, and I would see how stressful it could be for not only the children but also their parents.
"I wanted to create a space where clients could feel completely at ease, free from judgement or discomfort."
The Coven provides private, one-on-one appointments where the salon is exclusively theirs for the duration of the visit.
This eliminates rushing and pressure, contributing to a comfortable, relaxing environment.
Ms Wall added: "It's about creating an environment where you feel welcome, no matter what."
As well as being a sensory-friendly salon, The Coven also serves as a destination for clients seeking bold, vivid, and alternative hairstyles.
It specialises in everything from vibrant rainbow colours and platinum buzzcuts to mohawks, mullets, and gothic-inspired looks.
Ms Wall said: "I've always loved creating vivid, alternative looks, and The Coven allows me to really embrace that passion. Clients who want a more edgy, alternative vibe will love it here."
The Coven is also committed to supporting clients who are transitioning or exploring new gender identities, and Ms Wall has recently completed counselling training and courses on understanding autism.
She said: "We're here to help anyone who's on a journey of self-discovery or transitioning, whether it's exploring a new style or finding a look that matches how they feel inside.
"The Coven offers a more intimate, judgment-free space where clients can speak openly and feel comfortable discussing their needs.
"It's an honour to be part of such an important and personal process."
The Coven will host a special educational needs open day on November 9 from 10am to 2pm.
This will provide an opportunity for clients to meet Ms Wall and discuss their needs.
