A primary school is competing to win a new playground made from recycled materials.

Wellstead Primary School, in Hedge End, has entered the Sistema Recycled Playground Contest, which runs until January 2025.

The school is asking the Hedge End community to help by bringing their used plastic food storage containers and lids, as well as reusable plastic water bottles and caps, to the school’s collection box.

Used food storage containers and plastic bottles from any brand are accepted.

The school collection box, located next to the school reception entrance, is open to the public between 8am and 4pm, Monday through to Friday.

Sue Hemsworth a teacher from Wellstead Primary School said: “We’re thrilled to be participating in this great contest from Sistema and we are calling on all members of the Hedge End community to help us be in with a chance of winning a brand-new playground with a frame made from 100 per cent recycled waste.

"Simply bring any used food storage containers and lids, as well as reusable plastic water bottles and caps, to the drop-off location collection box at Wellstead Primary School in Hedge End between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm Monday through Friday.

"We also collect on TerraCycle’s Warburtons Bakery Free Recycling Programme and The Pringles Tube Free Collection Programme programmes so please feel free to drop off these types of waste to our public access collection point too!"

Run by food storage and hydration specialists Sistema, in partnership with recycling experts TerraCycle, the contest will award a playground with a frame made from fully recycled materials to the school that collects the most items.

The recycled playground will include two slides, an approach ramp with rope, and a large joining platform, among other features.

The winning and runner-up schools will also both receive a Sistema lunchbox and water bottle for each pupil.

Wellstead Primary School can monitor the amount of waste they have sent in for recycling through a leaderboard on the Sistema contest page on the TerraCycle website, which is updated monthly.
