People in Southampton have given a mixed reaction to Donald Trump’s re-election as US President.
The former President of the United States is now set to return to the White House after he defeated Kamala Harris in the election.
This means he will be the 47th president from January 2025.
University of Southampton academic, Professor of American History Kendrick Oliver, said there will be ‘unsettling’ implications for America, Britain and Europe.
Prof Oliver said: “Although the US economy boomed under Biden, compared with other major nations, inflation continued to be his administration’s – and the Harris campaign’s – Achilles heel.
"Trump’s brand of patriarchal, nativist, and authoritarian politics also held its appeal for many Americans.
“We can expect Trump’s new administration to depart even more starkly from liberal, democratic norms than his previous one.
“His victory will have profound and unsettling implications for American society and politics, for Britain, Europe, and the world.”
Republicans have also claimed control of the Senate.
'Strong victory'
Dr Joan Mahoney, Lecturer in Law at the University of Southampton, is an expert in America's electoral college, constitution and reproductive rights.
She said: "The election was a strong victory for the Republicans, not just Trump. Republicans took back the Senate, although the House is still in play.
"There will be lots of pondering by pundits as to the reasons, although I suspect it had more to do with the price of groceries and petrol than any major ideological shift. We can’t know how much of a part sexism and racism played.
"The election of Trump will have a substantial impact on domestic policy, and it will also have repercussions internationally, starting with a withdrawal of support for Ukraine and increased support for Netanyahu."
Echo readers react to election
Many Daily Echo readers have taken to social media to share their opinions on the result.
Scott Hyde said: “Excellent, watching the panels across the news networks.
“Seems that people of America want common sense policies.
“He’s improved his vote across all demographics.
“It wasn’t even close in the end. The Democrats went far too liberal.”
Vicky Ross said: “Great news.”
Ross Manning also said: “Great news.”
Ryan Small added: “Couldn’t be better.”
Meanwhile, Lewis Sibanyoni said: “Come on Trump.”
However, not everyone was happy with the result.
Jodie Andrews said: “Great so got a convict in charge of America.”
Stephen Hughes added: “Good luck Liebour! They just spent months slagging him off.
“Now they got to face him! Awkward!”
