A celebration of cinema, showcasing local talent and filmmaking from across the globe, opens in Southampton tonight.

Southampton Film Week, created by City Eye, is now in its 17th year and continues to cultivate a deeper appreciation of film and moving image within the city and beyond.

This year, the festival will spotlight an eclectic mix of features, shorts, documentaries, and live music-enhanced cinema experiences, not to mention the hilarious fun to be had with an immersive Monty Python cinema experience.

Southampton Film Week Director Susan Beckett said: "Watching a film can be a joyful and sometimes life-changing experience.

"Often the memories we make and emotions stirred at the cinema remain with us, and our favourite movies sustain us through the ups and downs of every day life. It is escapism, comforting and inspiring."

A special launch event tonight features the work of Derek Jarman, marking 30 years since his death and release of his final work Blue.

The event showcases the profound impact of Jarman’s work on contemporary cinema.

Master filmmaker Buster Keaton is celebrated with the silent classics Sherlock Jr. and The Navigator with live piano accompaniment at Turner Sims tomorrow (November 9) and on Thursday (November 14) with The General, screened with the magnificent Compton Pipe Organ raising the rafters of the Guildhall.

On Sunday, the SFW: Shorts Screening & Awards will showcase films submitted to a short film competition celebrating work from across the globe.

From over 100 submissions the 18 shortlisted films are now being judged and will be screened before winners are announced – and the audience cast their vote.

Industry professionals will gather on Tuesday for an insightful panel discussion, Filming in the Region.
