Residents reported seeing police cars descend on Shirley yesterday evening.
Shirley residents spotted three cars flying by in the vicinity of Malmesbury Road and took to Facebook to question why police were in the area.
Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that three vehicles responded to the area at around 6.50pm after a parked car was allegedly damaged with a wooden pole.
Police attended and a 34-year-old man from Southampton was arrested in connection with the incident.
He remains in custody.

It comes after a man was rushed to hospital after being found with a suspected stab wound to his neck on Sunday morning.
Portswood Councillor Katherine Barbour said that there needs to be a “prioritisation of work” by police to follow up recent issues.
Cllr Barbour said: "There’s a real need for the resources to be there, and unfortunately they are really struggling to do investigations and the work they need to be doing.
