Just 10 per cent of tills at one of Southampton's major supermarkets is a traditional manned checkout, a survey has revealed.
Almost 90 per cent of the checkouts at the Asda supermarket at The Marlands are self-service.
On the other hand, there are no self-service checkouts at the Food Warehouse store at West Quay Retail Park.
It comes after accessibility concerns were raised after Sainsbury's removed manned tills at their Shirley store in favour of self-service checkouts.
The Echo visited eight supermarkets in the city and surveyed their checkout areas.
In Southampton stores such as Asda and Lordshill Sainsbury’s, they have prioritised self-serve kiosks as their main type of checkout, making up between 80 per cent - 90 per cent of the options available.
At Asda’s Marland’s Superstore, the self-service kiosks dominated the cashiers at the front of the store.

When a reporter visited on Thursday, only a few of the cashiered tills were open, with one staff member serving.
Customer Daniel Cole said: “I find Asda self-checkouts are as good as an ashtray on a motorbike.
“[I] always need staff to come over and override them, the last time we went, we nearly abandoned it along with the shopping”.
But other customers have appreciated the chance to do their shopping at their own pace, shopper Judy Smith said: “I’m in my mid-70s and I like self-scanning and self-checkout, as I can go at my speed."
Similarly, full-time carer Sue Gibson added: “When I shop it is a chore I enjoy as I get some quiet time.
“I don’t need an over-enthusiastic checkout operator asking me questions”.
Tesco first introduced self-checkouts in 2003, promoting faster checkout speeds and more convenient shopping for their customers.

Ann Elizabeth Aitken from Otterbourne said: “I would rather go to a checkout with a nice friendly assistant.
“It is very annoying that most supermarkets are losing these checkouts, I have to wait for ages for an assistant if I self-scan when purchasing alcohol”.
The Echo contacted Co-op, Lidl, M&S, Asda, Iceland, Tesco and Sainsbury's.
A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s told the Echo: “We regularly review the services available in our stores to make sure we offer the most convenient experience to our customers.
“We have slightly increased the number of self-serve checkouts at Lords Hill superstore so that we can meet customer demand for this service.
"Our colleagues are on hand to help anyone who may need support using them and we continue to offer served checkouts for our customers who wish to use them."
